Velgrace Valedorna Graphic Novel Style (AU) by BJPentecost Velgrace Valedorna Graphic Novel Style (AU) by BJPentecost
*Le sigh.* If I did not have to worry about student loans, a condo, and assorted bills I would do this shit ALL day. It was fun (though difficult). I've been trying to get each panel down to under two hours and I've managed to average about 1.5 hrs per panel but some of the ones with complex shiz going on take up to or over 3 hrs. (Does anyone happen to know what the standard time is per panel in graphic novels is? I can't be too far off..... hopefully.)

If I was actually going to make a graphic novel out of this, I would need one of two things: To either be able to get each panel down to a half hour or my bills mysteriously poof forever. XD Seeing as how the second one probably isn't an option, I'm hoping to be able to churn out a panel per hour tops.

Zbrush/Photoshop. Average of 1.5 hrs per panel. The character is Velgrace which means "the most graceful" in his home tongue, Farscene. He has been with me for a while now and BOY has be gone through some changes. XD He started out as a damsel in distress, became more of a dudesel in distress, and now he is a kicker of asses. XD Not sure how that happened but I think I like him better this way.

one and a half hours?!
And now I must indulge in my habit of asking artists like you how do you make something like that in such a short span of time???

Hah. :D Don't worry. I've wondered the same thing about Nebezial and Tracy JB, among others.

I hope you understand that it's 1.5hrs *per panel.* I wish I could do like 12 of these in that time frame. I'd have published ten graphic novels by now. =P

As to how I can work so quickly? I combine Zbrush and PS. I sculpted a model and painted it to look like this character. When I want to do a painting featuring him, I pose the model, light it, render it, and paint over the render in PS. It makes things go... somewhat more quickly depending on various factors. You can learn more about this method here. Sometimes it's quicker to just paint it straight in PS but combining PS and Zbrush can be very handy.

Nebezial is so far out of my league. Like he's at least 2 Astronomical Units out of it. Probably close to 2.45 AUs.

I understood that. But a single panel for you takes me around 9 hours for ME to do. Hence my asking.
Though the reveltion that you paint over 3D models...I've been looking for a way around the black ink outline. In certain situations with the super fine details (eyes, mouth, etc.) the black outlines really hinder my ability to show expression and detail.

I was interested in Zbrush and I am certain that it is worth the price but $800??? I can buy a hobby car for less...
I may have a lower middle class income but that is waaaay too much for my budget.
I'm going to try my hand at Blender first.
...I wouldn't even think of torrenting the software. uTorrent is for movies, not software.

Blender is a great option. I haven't used its sculpting features but I've heard good things. You might also like to try out Sculptris if it's still around. It's like Zbrush training wheels and it's free. There's also Zbrush Core which you might want to look into. It's a cheaper, pared down version of Zbrush that still has the core functionalities. You just won't get all the bells and whistles which are mainly for industry professionals anyway.

I'm skeptical of stripped versions of software because of my experiences with Photoshop. Trying to switch from regular Photoshop pro to Elements was an almost insulting experience for me and made me switch completely to Krita for painting and Inkscape for the vector stuff. Photoshop's eternal rental leash also made me look for an alternative so I'm probably never going to use it again.
I'd rather go to Pirate Bay if Sculptris is out of production and download it there.

As to Adobe, nolo contendere! They are the fucking worst. I'm afraid of what's going to happen when my CS6 eventually stops working. I really don't want to move to the creative cloud. It's such a scam. I tried Krita but it would not play nice with my computer for some reason.

You can trust me when I say that Pixo is NOT anything like Adobe. With Sculptris, you can try it out. It's free. Nothing to lose really. Core, I cannot attest to, but it's Pixo and I trust them pretty much almost implicitly. You can at least look into it: zbrushcore.com/ It seems fairly impressive to me and IIRC, it's only 150$.

This is the same reason I'm going to switch to Linux if Microsoft gets funny ideas of how much more I'm willing to put up with.

I'm watching youtube guides on how to create character models right now. I know technically I can download base models, but I sort of want to build them for myself.

I definitely recommend building your own models from scratch. You don't want to be limited by using other people's models. But at the same time, there's no harm in downloading them and studying them. Seeing and understanding how other people model will help you learn to model.

I have a short film that has a bad ass character that I would like to make into a Graphic Novel.  Let me know if you are interested in working on the film and creating/designing the costumes and main character.

The only thing that bothers me about that boy is his long tail.... I am probably being so sexual, but I guess if that isn't a problem not only to dress but in sexual relationships.... I can't imagine it isn't.... The tail is impressing thought, lovely done.

Weird reason I've never done my nankinis (half anthro dwarfs catboys) with a tail: they would enjoy sex far less (in my unexperiences opinion about anthros)

I love the pannel where he tries to cut your head out of your torso. I think he looks lovely and the pose is so difficult from that angle so 10 points to gryffindor.

I have to say I quite like the whole painting, even if I am a too bad at english to get the jokes *sigh*

It's, like all you do, a piece of art.

This MIGHT be the most hilarious thing I've ever seen. I'm going to have to steal the prayer to the Ass Fairy.

You don't normally see graphic novels so meticulously rendered, especially if it's by one artist. That, or if they're painted, they're very loose. Most go penciller -> inker -> colorist, so it's less time for everyone. If you could simplify your process/style for a graphic novel rather than use your ultra-rendering powers, I think you could get the time down pretty low. Though that might be kinda tough if you're so used to rendering everything ultra realistically. x'D

He's like an inbetween, both male and female :3  That's really beautiful to look at, you're already quite fast at painting (especially with all that fur rendering)!
