Lately I've been playing this game called Tower of Saviors. It's free, fun, and addictive. I thought it might be fun to revamp one of my older works (older version found here: bobbie-the-jean.deviantart.com…
to make it look like a mock TOS-type game card. The flourishes, card, and monster designs are my own.
This, I imagine, would be a top tier card. She would have relatively low HP and low attack (compared to other cards of that tier) but can inflict status ailments and has killer awesome abilities. My head-canon TOS-type game would allow for a lot more customization like equipping artifacts that enhance abilities, grant new abilities, buff attributes, lessen weaknesses, etc. For example, hypothetically, this monster might have five inventory slots, one of which might be taken up by Athena's Ring. Athena's Ring grants all Ancient-aged monsters with an ability called "Wisdom of the Ancients" that reveals any hidden characteristics an enemy might have. This could be useful in a battle where monsters have hidden attributes.
Say the party comes up against what looks like a plain old fire monster. Athena's Ring reveals that the monster is demonic, has hidden acid and dark attributes, a chance to strike three times in one round, 55% resistance to poison, and weaknesses to light (45%), air (15%), and water (55%). These are things you would have to figure out the hard way unless one of your monsters has a "hidden aspect revealing" ability or a piece of equipment such as Athena's Ring.
The little icons at the bottom of the illustration mean different things as well. The globe means that she is widely know of, each red orb around the ring indicating how well known she is. Four would be a globally, very well-known entity (like the president of the US), one would be an entity less well-known but still known (such as a particularly mouthy senator). Fame can cause surprise random battles, among other things. The red eye icon is horror factor. Kyranak has a horror factor of three meaning that certain monsters will do less damage or flee from battle (weaker monsters and some mid-tier monsters.) The triangle dealy means that Kyranak has worshipers who will refuse to attack her but she may also have enemies who seek her out to vanquish her. Finally, the meat icon means that she must be fed consistently or she will lose levels.
Anyway, I'm rambling. I could probably elaborate on that stuff for hours and hours. This was big fun. Will definitely be doing it again sometime. Maybe I'll make a portfolio of these things and submit to Wizards of the Coast?
My eyesight is still bad. It seems to get worse and stay worse when concentrating on text for long periods of time. Even writing that little blurb at the bottom of the card totally wrecked my vision last night. O_O I actually had to stop working because I couldn't see. I really hope this resolves itself. : I'll be going in to see a neuro-opthamologist as soon as Obamacare insurance kicks in. My current insurance doesn't cover jack so I'd end up having to pay out of pocket for the visit, MRIs, labs and so on. There's something wrong in a country where over half of bankruptcies are caused by medical bills and 75% of those who went bankrupt HAD health insurance. Our system is broken. Anyway, didn't mean to soapbox. Only a few more months left.
